About Stripewell Canes

There was a time in England when certain things were simply understood. Standards were upheld without apology. Quality was expected, not negotiated. And the implements of proper discipline were crafted with the same care and seriousness as any fine English trade — by makers who knew their work, for those who knew what they were looking for.

Stripewell Canes is built on that tradition.

I am Miss Stripewell — a proper English craftswoman, and the maker behind this shop and its sister establishment, Englishvice Canes. I have spent over two decades studying and practising the disciplinary arts of the English institutional tradition, and thirteen years translating that knowledge into artisan rattan implements of the highest order. Stripewell Canes is my newer venture and my most personal one — a shopfront built around the centrepiece of that tradition: the traditional English school cane, with crook handle, crafted to a standard the form has always deserved.

The English school cane is not simply an object. It is a piece of national character — the embodiment of an era when discipline was taken seriously, when quality of craft was a matter of professional pride, and when the implements used in the great schools and institutions of this country were made to last and made to mean something. That tradition produced a very specific object. It is that object — and its finest expressions, including my Elite School Cane collection — that sits at the heart of everything offered here.

The rattan I work with is the finest available — sourced personally, graded by hand, and procured at the cost that genuine quality demands. It is not the material of the mass market. Neither is the making. Every cane that leaves this shop was crafted by me alone, from first selection to final finish, with the attention that only a sole maker working to her own exacting standards can bring to bear on an object. The result is an implement that collectors, connoisseurs, and those who know the difference will recognise at once — not because it announces itself, but because fine work never needs to.

Stripewell Canes is for those who appreciate provenance, authenticity, and the quiet distinction of something made properly. For those to whom the details matter — the set of the crook, the grain of the rattan, the finish of the handle. For those who understand that certain things, done correctly, are worth paying for.
